Hypnotherapy for Language Learning
This page is divided into two.
The left-hand side is for those of you whose mother tongue is English and who want to learn Portuguese or another language. The right-hand side is for Portuguese speakers who already have a basis of English (around intermediate level), but who are finding it difficult to progress any further.

Learn Portuguese Learn English
Learning a language successfully requires the learner to have motivation, commitment, memory, concentration and confidence.
Many people possess these characteristics in abundance and have no problem achieving whatever it is they set their minds to. However, a great many others just need a little assistance to help them maximize their potential. Let’s look at each of these five factors in turn in relation to language acquisition. Motivation Motivation stems from having a reason to learn the language. When you first start to learn Portuguese, you are obviously motivated. You are in a new country, you want to fit in and live a normal life. However, as time goes by, you find that there are enough English-speaking Portuguese around to help you overcome everyday problems, you fall in with the English-speaking ex-pats and the process of living overtakes the honeymoon period. At that point, although you know you ought to carry on learning Portuguese, the initial reasons don't seem quite so compelling and so your motivation can waver, with the result that you make do and mend with what little Portuguese you have, while at the same time speaking English. Commitment As with motivation, commitment is 100% at the beginning, but as more and more things land on your plate, making extra demands on your time, you find less hours available during the week to learn. Left unchecked, after a few weeks, this eventually results in NO learning being done. Concentration At the beginning of your course, you find that concentration comes quite easily. The first steps are not that difficult and you are eager to please. A few lessons into the course, though, and concentration can falter as the going gets a little bit tougher, and you start to wonder if you are really cut out for learning a new language at your time in life. In addition, you are a busy person with 101 things on your mind, all of which are competing for a place in your consciousness. This may well lead to you to mentally switching off and missing chunks of learning. In turn, the course becomes even harder and you are more likely to quit. Memory Learning a language means remembering a lot of new things. There’s vocabulary, grammar rules, pronunciation, verb endings and tense usage to name just a few of them. As you grow older, your memory may not seem be all that it was, and not remembering stuff you learned causes frustration. Frustration leads to quitting. Confidence When we try to speak a new language, particularly one that has many different sounds to our own, it can make us feel self-conscious. This can make us reluctant to try out our new found skill both inside and outside the classroom. In fact, our fear is probably worse outside, as any little setback can dent our confidence and make us think people don’t understand us. If you’ve tried to learn Portuguese, or another language, and quit before the end, I bet it was because of one, some or all of the above. When you learnt to speak English, you were a young child. No one had to sit you down and explain grammar and verbs etc., you just assimilated them. Likewise with vocabulary. The whole process was done subconsciously. Now, when you try to learn, you are doing it consciously, and therein lies the problem.... and the solution. The solution is hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious, bypassing the conscious mind and its objections to help you achieve your goals. A few sessions of hypnotherapy can increase and maintain your motivation, reinforce and maintain your commitment, improve your concentration and ability to remember, and boost and maintain your confidence. And the good news is that once hypnotherapy has got you on your way, your new learning techniques will become second nature, and you won’t require hypnotherapy again as every lesson, conversation etc. builds increased motivation, commitment, concentration, memory and confidence.* Furthermore, and just as important, if you are attending Portuguese lessons, hypnotherapy can help you give 100% every time you step inside the classroom. Basically, through the application of a 'trigger', you achieve a state of hypnosis which is maintained throughout the lesson, and then whatever is taught in the lesson goes straight into your subconscious mind, bypassing the conscious mind's objections. Of course, this would work even better if you have one-to-one private lessons. If the idea of having hypnotherapy sessions doesn't appeal to you, you can achieve similar results through self-hypnosis. Once learned, and it's very easy, all you have to do is practice like you would when learning any other skill, and it's much cheaper than going for a hypnotherapy session before each lesson. You can find out more information about learning self-hypnosis by clicking here. Once you've taught yourself, and given yourself adequate practice, all you have to do is hypnotise yourself to visualise your goals or give yourself suitable suggestions. Hypnotherapy really can aid you to better language learning. Why don’t you call me today, and we can talk about your particular situation? The first session is free, and if you don’t want to continue the therapy, you lose nothing except an hour of your time. Also available in groups. * Subject to you continually using/learning Portuguese or whatever language. If you stop for any period of time, your skill level will drop, just like any other skill that isn’t practiced. |
For those of you learning English, there are two possibilities.
Plan A Undergo hypnotherapy to maximise your motivation (motivação), commitment (compromisso), concentration (concentração), memory (memória) and confidence (confiança) for when you have your lessons – similar to those who want to learn Portuguese. Motivation Motivation stems from having a reason to learn the language. When you first start to learn English, you are obviously motivated. However, as time goes by and the process of living overtakes the first flush of enthusiasm, your initial reasons for learning English may not appear to be as strong as they once were, and so your motivation can lessen, and you manage with what little English you have, while at the same time speaking Portuguese. A few lessons into the course, though, and concentration can lessen as the subject becomes a litttle bit harder, and you start to wonder if you are really suited to learning a new language at your time in life. In addition, you are a busy person with 101 things on your mind, all of which are competing for a place in your consciousness. This may well lead to you to mentally switching off and missing important parts of learning.
